"Heterarchial Landscape" – Poetic Reaction

The poetic and expressive architecture articulates an emotional reaction to the dull surroundings of the site. It promises unconventional spatial experiences.

The Idea
This project aims to create an antithetical and poetic experience in striking contrast to the site’s conservative surroundings. It deploys an unconventional, biomorphic and “emotional” architecture to express its vision. Structurally, it envisions a central urban ensemble embedded within a large green recreation area intended to provide various experiential moments.

The Project
The project applies the space syntax method of Bill Hillier to optimize the internal and external connectivity of the various elements. The community centre orchestrates the whole urban ensemble, creating a strong centrality in the middle of the site. Its influence extends all the way to the riverside park. The river Wien is given a waterside promenade with a bridge across to the neighboring district.

The Jury Assessment
The author’s drive to create unconventional spatial experiences has led to spaces that may impede the sense of orientation of impaired people. The project deserves special mention because of its effort to balance the requirements of the competition with its unconventional approach, its theoretical analysis, and its impressive visualization.
