![]() "Urban Punctuation" – A Housing Bridge
A “housing bridge” comprising two concentric structural arcs runs parallel to the flow of the Vienna River. The inner streets between the parallel arcs contain dense, intimate spaces with the potential to create a vibrant urban atmosphere.
The Team Students: Gilles Meyer, Régis Berthet, Julien Rochet
Professor: Prof. Georges Heintz School: Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Strasbourg (France) Video The Idea The key idea of this project is to build a “housing bridge” comprising two concentric structural arcs, running parallel to the flow of the river Wien. They run all the way from the subway station of U4 in the east to the River Park in the west. A housing tower, articulated as a landmark, is positioned like a pivot between the two arcs. The Project The apartments are mostly in the housing tower in the middle of the site, but some are also built in the eastern wing of the bridge. The strips between the parallel arcs contain dense, intimate spaces with the potential to create a vibrant atmosphere. The loud sport and leisure activities are located in the west and the quiet green areas in the south. The community centre is placed in the western wing. The Jury Assessment This promising project shows logical clarity in its functional suggestions and skillful integration of the site into the urban setting. But though most of the requirements have been met, the project also has weaknesses. For example, it visually undermines the prominent Otto Wagner bridge by building the housing tower too close to it. The project also has too few amenities for disabled persons in the apartments. |
