Removing barriers to culture in Paris
The competition task of the Schindler Award 2005 / 2006 turned out to be a formidable challenge for participants. They had to a design a museum walk accessible to everyone - regardless of capabilities - amid serious obstacles. They also had to come up with an exhibition concept to create awareness about access for all.

Museum Walk for All
The task to create a "Museum Walk for All" meant participants had to design a route that linked the various museums located around the Paris landmarks: the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysées, the Hôtel des Invalides, the Eiffel Tower, and the Trocadéro.

The main task was to remove the barriers along the route. It contains numerous obstacles, not least the Seine river itself, which had to be bridged between the Palais de Tokyo on the south bank and the Quai Branly across the river at the Passerelle Debilly. There are also two express ways and a steep embankment to negotiate. These obstacles mean handicapped visitors must take a long and unattractive detour.

Over 500 participants from all over Europe
In total 504 students from 58 architectural schools and universities in 22 European countries* applied for the competition. Of the 88 projects submitted, 14 came from schools; 74 from individual students or groups of students.

*Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Georgia, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
