Schindler Award 2006

Paris – city of culture and fashion – boasts innumerable museums and exhibitions. Adding another one, you might say, would be too much of a good thing. Not so! At least not for people who, for reasons of disability, cannot visit many of these respositories of culture. "Removing Barriers to Culture" was the slogan of the Schindler Award 2006.

To facilitate "Access for All" to some of the many museums in the heart of Paris would be a huge challenge. Although these museums are grouped closely together at the foot of the Eiffel Tower - lovely surroundings for a relaxing stroll - the topography and the traffic make mobility here all but impossible for people with disabilities. Not only must they contend with the height difference between the southern bank of the Seine river and the bluff on the northern bank, but there is the heavy traffic on the expressway "Avenue de New York" as well as the steps leading up to the "Passerelle Debilly".
