Philosophy of the Schindler Award
"Access for All" seeks a seismic shift in our thinking, where the so-called "normal" population no longer sets the standards of our urban environment, to the detriment of many others. Instead it recognizes the rights of everyone, whatever their individual capabilities, to share and enjoy the same architectural spaces.
Access for All goes further than simply prescribing forms of architecture which rid urban spaces of barriers to people with differing capabilities. It specifically seeks to draw into public spaces people who are today hindered to varying degrees because of their disabilities. The goal of the Schindler Award for Architecture "Access for All" is to create in participants' minds a special awareness of the different forms of disability and of different possibilities of circumventing these disabilities. And by doing so to influence future architects in their everyday work. Such a challenge has never before been laid down to European architecture students. What is also special about the Award is that it is a competition among schools of architecture. Philosophy Film |
