Philosophy of the Schindler Award
The Schindler Award is driven by the vision of intelligent and sustainable architectural solutions. Solutions that enable people of all ages and capabilities to benefit from barrier-free mobility within urban spaces – by anticipating changing needs throughout human life.
The goal of the Schindler Award for Architecture "Access for All" is to create in participants' minds a special awareness of the different forms of disability and of different possibilities of circumventing these disabilities. And by doing so to influence future architects in their everyday work. Philosophy Video The Schindler Award is not only a competiton for students. It's also a competition of schools of architecture. A significant achievement of the Schindler Award has been to bring accessibility as a topic into European schools of architecture. Many which supported their students' participation in the Award have introduced the topic into lectures and their curricula with the result that many young architects in Europe realize that accessibility – or more often the lack of it – affects a significant and growing proportion of the population. To schools of architecture the Schindler Award offers a compelling way to create awareness of barrier-free mobility and to position themselves as socially responsible institutions. How this can be achieved shows the example of the Technical University of Catalunia (Spain) Video: Schindler Award at the Technical University of Catalunia |
