Second Prize: Jakub Krcmar and Martina Sotkovska, CTU – Faculty of Architecture (Czech Republic)
![]() "Vienna Carpet"" – A public park with a "vertical street"
The authors of this project created a large public space with flexible functions by laying a sloping "carpet" over the entire site. All required functions are condensed into a high-rise tower and a community center. The Team Students: Jakub Krcmar and Martina Sotkovska Professor: Prof. Ivan Plicka School: CTU – Faculty of Architecture (Czech Republic) Video The Idea The leitmotif of this project is to make a multifunctional green area out of the entire site. Extending like a “carpet”, the landscape rises uphill toward the northern border, “tucking away” the fast food restaurant and gas station under its northeastern edge, thus protecting the site from traffic noise. Most of the area is left empty except for a residential tower as a landmark and a vibrant community center.
The Project Three elements define the project: a high-rise residential building, a community center built as a linear structure along the shore of the river Wien that serves various public functions, and an expansive green area that radiates in folds and stripes like a hand fan from (or toward) the community center in the west – making it the symbolic focal point of the area.
The Jury Assessment Despite the questionable feasibility of the residential tower, the project responds to the functional requirements of the competition with visual and spatial simplicity, suggesting a solution that creates large spaces for young and old with integrative public functions. The green radial stripes and the elaborate community center offer flexible recreational uses spread out over the whole site.
